The first terminal is the C terminal, which means common. This is the terminal attached to the AC motor and compressor. Usually, multiple wires are connected to this terminal. Why? Because it acts as a return path for the current, completing the loop and allowing all parts of the AC to run.

2- FAN Terminal

As the name suggests, this terminal of the AC capacitor is only connected to the condenser fan motor. So, it powers the AC fan motor to spread air and remove heat. Heat removal is crucial for the entire AC to work smoothly.

3- HERM Terminal

HERM stands for Hermetic Compressor. So, as is clear from the name, this terminal of the AC capacitor is connected to the compressor motor. The compressor is the central part of your AC unit that helps cool your space. 

Common AC Capacitor Wiring Colors and Their Meanings

Do you have a basic understanding of the AC capacitor terminals? If so, understanding their wire colors is relatively easy. So let’s dive in and explain each AC capacitor wiring color and its meaning. 

1- Brown Wire

The first wire color you will see in the AC capacitor is brown. The brown wire is connected to the FAN terminal I discussed above. It supplies electric current to start the fan motor, so the fan can dissipate the heat and prevent heat buildup in the AC. If the brown wire is loose, the fan will not work, and the AC can overheat and shut down. 

2- Yellow Wire

The second wire color is yellow in the AC capacitor. This color wire is usually attached to the HERM terminal, which is connected to the compressor. So, the yellow wire powers the compressor, which is the heart of the AC unit. Without the yellow wire, the whole AC unit won’t start or run correctly.

3- Black Wire

The black wire in the AC capacitor is one of the most critical wires. This wire carries power from the contactor to the capacitor or other AC components. It means it is responsible for carrying current when the system is powered on. That’s why the black wire is also known as the hot or live wire. 

4- Red Wire

Another wire in the AC capacitor is red. It is used for power or control voltage connections in an AC system. However, in some HVAC systems, the red wire also helps transfer signals between the thermostat and control board for detection. But remember, the red wire is not directly connected to the capacitor. It is part of the low- and high-voltage circuit board and serves as a supporting system in the AC unit.

5- White or Blue Wire

The white wire is the neutral wire. It means this wire carries the current back to the source and acts as a return path. In this way, the white wire is usually used to complete the circuit and allow the current to complete its cycle to power different AC parts. That’s why it is connected to the Common terminal in the AC capacitor. 

6- Orange Wire

NO! I never recommend replacing the AC capacitor based solely on wire color. Wire colors only provide clues for identifying a wire’s function and where it should go.  As I said above, these wire colors are not always the same across all air conditioning systems. If you rely on the wire color pattern and start connecting it to the terminals, there’s a chance you’ll attach the wrong wire to the wrong terminals. 

This can cause immediate short circuits and fail the entire AC system. That’s why you should always follow the terminal labels on the capacitor or manuals. These labels are usually marked as C (Common), FAN, and HERM (compressor). They tell you exactly where each wire should go, regardless of its color. Besides, you should also follow the wiring diagram inside the AC unit. It provides you with complete manufacturer wiring information.
